Inspired Top Trumps - Wood Anemone
Usually a sign of Ancient Woodland – a woodland that has existed continuously since 1600 – these delicate flowers bloom continuously between March and May in deciduous woodlands.
It is an extremely slow growing plant, potentially taking a century to inhabit a few extra metres of a woodland floor. The Anemone takes advantage of the extra sunshine before the woodland canopy develops and prevents light reaching the plant so abundantly.
- Six white petals
- Height up to 25cm
- Named after the Greek God Anemos – it’s other common name is Wind Flower
- The plant’s smell prevents animals from eating it and it is poisonous to humans
