Entry Requirements and Qualification Modules
Level 3 candidates must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have an interest in learning about the principles of Forest School
- Hold a current enhanced DBS certificate
- Be a qualified teacher, play-worker, youth-worker or support worker (to Level 2 or equivalent) OR have at least two years experience of working with groups as a leader.
- Have access to a Forest School site and a group of students to deliver practical (and assessed) sessions*

How the Course is Delivered
This Forest School training Level 3 is a blend of practical and theory:
- 5 Days On-Site Practical:
- Visit a local woodland
- See Forest School Leaders providing sessions to their target age group
- Work alongside qualified teachers to support your understanding of EYFS/Curriculum links
- Home Study: Equivalent of 5 days self-directed theory coursework.
- Observation: You will be observed within your own setting (or ours if you do not have one), delivering a Forest School session, on a date set with your tutor.
IMPORTANT COURSEWORK DEADLINE
Please be aware that it is a requirement of the awarding body that all coursework must be completed and signed off within one year of starting the course. Failure to complete in this time frame will forfeit your qualification and you may be required to pay for and complete the course again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Level 1 or 2 before doing Level 3?
No, you do not. You can go straight to Level 3 training if you are over 21 and have experience working with groups (children or adults). This is the full practitioner qualification that allows you to set up and run your own Forest School.
How long does the Level 3 course take?
The training consists of 5 initial training days (usually one week) followed by a portfolio development period. Most students complete their portfolio and practical sessions within 6 to 9 months, though you have up to 12 months if needed.
Can I use Sports Premium funding for this course?
Yes! Many schools fund our Level 3 Forest School training using their PE and Sports Premium budget. This is a sustainable way to invest in long-term outdoor learning for your pupils.
Where is the training held in Gloucestershire?
Our training centre is located in Churchdown, Gloucestershire, just 5 minutes from M5 Junction 11a. We are easily accessible for trainees coming from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bristol, Worcester, and Swindon.
Is this qualification nationally recognised?
Yes. We offer an Ofqual-regulated qualification accredited by AIM Qualifications. It is the nationally and internationally recognised standard for Forest School Leaders in the UK.
Does the Forest School Level 3 qualification expire?
No, the Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification is a lifelong certification and does not expire. However, you must keep your First Aid qualification up to date (renewed every 3 years).
Do I need to be a qualified teacher?
No. While many teachers take our course, it is open to anyone with significant experience leading groups, such as youth workers, rangers, TA’s, and outdoor educators.
Can I do Forest School Leader training online?
We believe Forest School must be learned outdoors, not behind a screen. Our course is 100% face-to-face in an ancient woodland. This ensures you gain the practical skills and confidence that online courses simply cannot provide.
