Admissions & Requirements

Do I need to complete Level 1 or Level 2 before starting Level 3?
No, you do not! You can jump straight into the Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification as long as you meet the entry criteria. Level 1 and 2 are great stepping stones, but they are not mandatory prerequisites.
What are the entry requirements for the Level 3 course?
To train as a Forest School Leader with us, you need to:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Hold (or have applied for) an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Have experience working with groups (e.g., as a teacher, TA, youth worker, or Ranger) OR hold a Level 2 qualification.
  • Hold (or plan to complete) a Forest School First Aid certificate.
I don’t have my First Aid certificate yet. Can I still book?
Yes! You do not need to hold the First Aid certificate to attend the training week. You only need it in place before you start your 6 pilot sessions (which usually happens a few months after the training course).
Can I bring my dog or child to the training days?
We love dogs and kids (obviously!), but we cannot allow them on the training courses. The days are intensive, involving fire, tools, and focused learning, so we require a distraction-free environment for safety and insurance reasons.

Course Structure & Worries

Does the qualification expire?
No! The Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification is a lifelong achievement. However, to practice legally, you must renew your Forest School First Aid certificate every 3 years.
How academic is the course? What if I haven’t studied in years?
The course is a mix of practical skills and theory. There is a Portfolio of Evidence (approx 110 hours of self-study) including risk assessments and essay-style questions.

Don’t worry: Many of our trainees haven’t written an essay in 20 years. We provide full mentor support, templates, and guidance. We won’t let you struggle!

What happens if I fail an assignment?
It is very rare to “fail”. If an assignment doesn’t meet the criteria, it is simply referred back to you with feedback from your tutor on what to add or change. You can resubmit until it is right. We are here to help you pass.
Why don’t you offer online Forest School training?
We believe Forest School is a “feeling.” You cannot learn to safely manage a fire, use tools, or assess ecological impact through a screen. Our courses are 100% face-to-face to ensure you leave as a safe, confident leader.
Who is the awarding body?
We are an approved centre for AIM Qualifications (an Ofqual-regulated awarding body). This is the gold standard for Forest School training in the UK.

Travel & Location

I am travelling from Worcester / Bristol / Swindon. Is the commute manageable?
Yes! We are strategically located in Churchdown, just minutes from M5 Junction 11. This makes us an easy commute for trainees coming from:

  • Worcester: Approx 35 mins
  • Bristol: Approx 45 mins
  • Swindon: Approx 45 mins
  • Oxford: Approx 55 mins
Is there parking and public transport?
Parking: Yes, we have ample free parking on site.
Bus: The Stagecoach Gold 94 (Cheltenham to Gloucester) stops very close by.
Train: Cheltenham Spa and Gloucester stations are short taxi rides away.
Do you cover the Forest of Dean area?
Absolutely. We are the training provider of choice for many schools in the Forest of Dean. Our site provides a similar ecological setting, making the skills highly transferable.
I am staying overnight. Can you recommend accommodation?
Yes. We regularly host trainees from Warwickshire and further afield. There are several affordable options nearby, including Premier Inn (Gloucester/Cheltenham) and independent B&Bs in Churchdown village.

Practicalities & Kit

What kit do I need to bring?
We are outdoors in all weathers! You will need:

  • Waterproofs: Good quality jacket and trousers.
  • Footwear: Sturdy walking boots (essential). No sandals.
  • Clothing: Long sleeves and trousers (essential for protection against scratches/stings).
Do we go out in the rain?
“There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing!” Yes, we train rain or shine (unless winds are dangerously high). We have a large parachute shelter and a heated indoor space if things get too extreme.
Do I need to buy my own tools?
No. We provide all tools (bow saws, loppers, knives, billhooks) for you to use during the training week. We will advise you on what to buy for your own kit later.
Are there toilets and facilities on site?
Yes. While we are in a woodland setting, we have access to proper toilet facilities and hand-washing stations.
